Previous Projects

The identity of certain customers involved in the following projects has been withheld due to confidentiality agreements. Please feel free to Contact Us for more details.

Industrial Customer One

The solution involved the implementation of an Enterprise Search platform to perform advanced indexing and retrieval of documents from DB2 Databases, Lotus Notes Databases, File Systems and specific web sites. Adherence to document level security for all sources was imperative.

Industrial Customer Two

This project involved one of the biggest roll outs of enterprise search that Knowledge Focus has ever performed. Integration to the PiGo DMS solution was performed to index and retrieve all documents and meta-data in the DMS. NT File systems were also indexed and made available for search. The scale of the project also included a SAP DMS integration for 1 of the 9 locations involved in our implementation.

Mining Customer One

The solution, which was initially built as a strategic market information system, comprised of integrations with a number of systems to enable a single point of search and information gathering to facilitate mainly research and business development. Some of the sources for the solution included: File Systems, GIS system, Web Sites, Library System, UNIX mailboxes, SAP DMS.

Government Customer One

We have implemented solutions for a number of government customers. They were all high-end enterprise search solutions which catered for integration to the following systems: SAP, Oracle, GIS, Imaging, File Systems, Intranets, Web Sites, MS SQL

Government Customer Two

This solution involved integration to the customers portal and enabled advanced index and retrieval of information across many of their information sources including: Document Management System (SharePoint Portal), Records Management System (Meridio), intranet sites and external websites. Effectively the solution allowed a single point of access to information, from disparate sources, through an intelligent retrieval platform. Part of the solution also included visualisation, entity extraction and relationship mapping of various entities across many sources of information.

SITA

Knowledge Focus were tasked by SITA to prove the concept that Enterprise Search platforms can be used to overcome the complexity of ECM systems, which arise out of compliance regulations, by effectively using "search" as the primary user interface. The implementation included a FAST ESP implementation which indexed SITA's open source document management system (Alfresco) and their Intranet site. Integrations were then performed to commonly used desktop applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft's Windows Desktop Search, which effectively became the interface to the various sources of information. This enabled advanced retrieval of information from all sources, directly from the desktop and/or desktop applications which effectively alleviated the need to negotiate complex compliance procedures (checkout workflows etc.) and file plans, which form part of the regulations to any successful implementation of an ECM system. The project was deemed a success and proved the concept that search could indeed be used as the interface to alleviate complexity caused by compliance.

UNISA

The original implementation of this solution was performed for Technikon South Africa (TSA). The solution was then ported to the UNISA environment following the merger of the two organisations. The original solution involved a full integration to one of TSA's home grown Document Management Systems and provided advanced search capabilities across various sources of information, including the DMS. Following the merger, an integration and data migration to Microsoft SharePoint Portal was performed to enable the same functionality in the UNISA environment.

Financial Security Customer One

This solution involved the implementation of an Enterprise Search platform to perform advanced indexing and retrieval of documents from Microsoft SQL Databases and File Systems located on Novell servers which required integration into Novell NDS via LDAP. This site required us to index a number of different databases each with between 60 and 150 tables. Groupwise was also integrated to, with their repositories made searchable. Security was absolutely essential on this site and adherence to disparate security systems through our central point of search and retrieval was critical.

Online Retail Customer One

The project entailed us working together with a number of separate development companies and integrators to create an internet facing online retail store with social networking functionality. Our task was to implement advanced search functionality over the product catalogue and social networking content. Relevancy of results had to be manipulated according to factors such as relevancy, availability and popularity of products and social content. We also had to generate dynamic navigators based upon search clue and content to enable easy filtering and navigation of results.

Botswana Accountant General

The Botswana Accountant Generals office had a requirement to reduce the amount of paper that needed to be filed, and make these papers digitally available, through enterprise search, to the whole organisation. We were further requested to fully integrate the search solution with Oracle Finances.

Media Customer One

This customer had a requirement to ingest video tape libraries that could be catalogued and then searched over. This requirement was effectively a solution to index and retrieve their video tape assets that, until we had completed this solution, they had to manage through a manual process.

Oil & Gas Customer One

A project was awarded to Knowledge Focus to assist an Oil & Gas customer in forming search strategies, in particular utilising Taxonomies for document retrieval across multiple sources. This involved investigation, reporting and recommendations based on in depth analysis and auditing of the customers current taxonomical structures, linguistic resources and ECM systems.

Botswana TV (BTV)

The BTV project required us to create a Digital Archive and Media Asset Management solution. The configuration is for remote VTR feeds to be routed via Omnibus to a Transcoding server which creates a high-res clip and low-res clip. The high-res clip is then archived into the Archive Management server while the low-res clip placed in Media Archive the Media Asset management tool. The low-res video clip is then catalogued and made available to the whole enterprise via their network. Integration between Media Archive, Omnibus, Quantel, Anystream Agility and DIVA Archive was required for this project.

Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC)

NBC involved a project in which we were required to create a Digital Archive and Media Asset Management solution. We were required to create a digital archive where XDCAM, J-30, DVC PRO and DVCAM tapes were to be ingested and the high-res video transcoded to low-res video, for storage in a media archive. The video is then catalogued and made available to the whole enterprise via their network.

Broadcast Customer One

This customer required us to create a video logging and retrieval solution for 2 of their reality programs. The system made it possible to capture, digitise and easily and efficiently catalogue the video footage. The solution we developed enabled the show's directors and editors to instantly find, preview and edit the shots they wanted, right from their desktops. They simply typed in a desired search clue and a range of relevant footage was displayed as thumbnails. Descriptive metadata was added to each video, such as the tape number, date, time, cameraman and location. Additionally, an integrated edit decision list (EDL) interfaced with the edit suites to further facilitate quick, easy and cost-effective editing of the video footage.

Broadcast Customer Two

This customer requested us to provide a live logging solution to assist the director of a live broadcast to create an edit decision list (EDL). A specific sports logging interface was created for the live logger to quickly add important events linked to their time-codes. The interface catered for live logging of Cricket, Rugby and Soccer to occur. The clip was then managed in a media asset management solution and the metadata indexed and made searchable to facilitate easy retrieval.

NEMISA

The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA) came into being as an institution of education and learning, specializing in teaching the production and technical skills applicable to the TV, radio and broadcasting industries. They had a requirement to for a digital multimedia system. The project involved indexing and retrieval of numerous data sources and required integration to their InMagic solution, scanned and OCRed documents, audio and video data. Remote access via the internet, with a secure login, was also set up for this project.

Financial Customer One

This customer had a requirement to make their hard copy legal library and investment library documents digitally available throughout the organisation. The project involved digitising these documents by scanning them and then passing them on to an OCR server. After the OCR process, these documents were in a PDF format with a text layer which was then indexed and made searchable using our enterprise search technologies.

Financial Customer Two

This project involved enabling advanced retrieval capabilities over a number of databases which were accessible through the customers MS SQL based repository. The project included the development of a custom user interface.

Australian Government POC

This project was a proof of concept for the Australian Government who required a fully featured DMS, RMS, BPM and Enterprise Search solution. This project took place prior to the buyout of Convera by FAST. The Australian Convera partners requested Convera to send them knowledgeable resources to assist with the implementation of the Enterprise search portion of the Proof of Concept due to the large scale of the project and high stakes involved. Knowledge Focus, being a senior, experienced and knowledgeable professional services provider, was requested to send a resource to assist with the project.
